The link formats Twitch gives you

Twitch hands out clip links in more than one shape, which is the usual reason a clip downloader refuses a perfectly valid URL. All of these work here:

clips.twitch.tv/SomeClipSlug is what the Share button produces. twitch.tv/channelname/clip/SomeClipSlug is what you get browsing a channel's Clips tab. clips.twitch.tv/embed?clip=SomeClipSlug turns up when a clip is embedded on another site. Older links sometimes carry the channel name before the slug as well.

The part that identifies the clip is the slug — the run of words on the end, usually something like SpicyEnergeticBadgerHeyGuys. As long as that survives the copy and paste, the clip resolves.

Saving the clip

Paste the link into the box at the top and press Download. The clip's title, the broadcaster, the duration and a thumbnail come back so you can check you have the right moment before spending any bandwidth. Then pick a resolution and the MP4 saves.

Nothing needs installing to download Twitch clips this way — no desktop app, no browser extension and no account. Turning a Twitch clip to MP4 on disk is really just a file transfer, and that is all this page does.

There is no progress bar and no conversion step, which sometimes makes people think nothing happened. It is simply the fast path: your browser is downloading a finished file rather than waiting on one to be assembled.

Why clips are faster than past broadcasts

A clip is stored as a single MP4 on Twitch's CDN. Ask for it and you get a video file, so the download is a straight passthrough — the signed URL is resolved for you and the bytes stream through untouched.

Past broadcasts work nothing like that. They are HLS: thousands of small segments and a playlist, with no MP4 anywhere, so one has to be assembled in the browser before you can save it. A practical side effect: because clips are ordinary files served with range support, an interrupted clip download can resume where it stopped rather than starting over.

Vertical and portrait clip renders

Twitch increasingly publishes a second, portrait-framed render of a clip for mobile and short-form video. When one exists it appears in the quality list marked Vertical, underneath the normal landscape renditions.

That is genuinely useful if the clip is heading for a phone-shaped feed, because you get Twitch's own vertical framing instead of cropping a 16:9 file yourself and guessing where the action sits. Not every clip has one — it depends on how the clip was created and how recently.

Downloading clips on iPhone and Android

Nothing to install on either. On iPhone and iPad, open the clip page in Safari, copy the link, paste it here and choose a quality. Safari asks whether to download; the file lands in Files → Downloads, and from there you can move it into Photos.

On Android, Chrome saves straight to your Downloads folder and the clip shows up in your gallery or file manager. Clips are small enough that mobile data is rarely an issue, though Source on a long clip is still worth checking before you start on a metered connection.

Twitch clip download quality: source versus a smaller file

Every rendition attached to the clip is listed, best first, with the top one marked Source and 720p or better tagged HD. For gameplay, 60fps renditions are labelled as such — 1080p60 rather than plain 1080p — and keeping that framerate is the difference between a clip that reads clearly and one that stutters.

Pick Source when the clip is going into an edit or being re-uploaded. Drop a step down when you only need to send it to someone. Either way the file is downloaded as Twitch encoded it, so a smaller choice is not compressed a second time here.

Making a clip before you download it

If the moment you want has not been clipped yet, you have to create the clip first: open the stream or past broadcast, press the clip button (or Alt + X), adjust the window, and publish. Twitch gives you the link, and that link works here.

Credit and permission

A clip usually involves two people: the streamer whose content it is, and the viewer who captured it. Downloading for personal use is one thing; re-uploading is another. If a clip is going anywhere public, name the channel and link back to it.

Some clips are also off limits regardless of intent. Clips cut from subscriber-only content stay gated, and anything the creator deleted is gone for good. Keep to public content, respect Twitch's Terms of Service, and honour a streamer's wishes if they would rather their content stayed on Twitch.
